This is a new 11-week night-class course, so is ideal for students who can only attend during the evening. The course provides comprehensive training in the aesthetic and structural aspects of website design.
The first day is devoted to Mac basics, after which students receive in-depth training in design based on current world web standards, markup and site creation. They start with a theoretical and practical introduction to the web and semantic markup using HTML, and then cover page layout and styling using Cascading Style Sheets (CSS).
The course focuses on the best principles of web design, and includes web graphics, layout, composition, colour, texture, typography, imagery, animation and usability.
Students will also be taught to upload and download websites using FTP, the different file formats on the web, the business of domain registration and web hosting, an introduction to web server basics, databases, content management systems and an introduction to the programming languages on the web.
Successful candidates will leave with the ability to effectively design and create valid web pages which can either be published as is, or integrated into any modern web content management system.
The final project of the course will involve students publishing their work in an online portfolio, which will be hosted either on a Hirt & Carter server or their own server, with their own domain (www.studentname.com).
The minimum pass mark is 70% and a certificate will be awarded to each student on graduation.
Certain Photoshop skills are prerequisites for the course. These skills include making and working with selections, quick masks, layers, shadows, colour correcting, cropping, deep-etching, understanding different modes, cloning, adjustment layers, resolution and image size adjustments and saving in the correct formats.
If you do not have the necessary Photoshop skills, Hirt & Carter will be running a two-week Photoshop course before the Comprehensive Web Design course starts. You will either need to attend this course or make some other arrangement to acquire the necessary skills before you can take the Web Design module.
Courses are scheduled on demand. The costs R13200.
The two-week Photoshop will also run on demand, 2 weeks before the Web Design course. The cost is R2900 if you have registered for the Web Design course, and R3600 if you have not.
